A good first game has a short rulebook and a turn anyone can follow. Three modern classics fit, and all three won Spiel des Jahres.
Ticket to Ride
Ticket to Ride (Spiel des Jahres 2004). Players collect matching train cards and claim rail routes across North America. Days of Wonder lists 2 to 5 players, ages 8 and up, and 30 to 60 minutes. The jury praised its “remarkably simple gameplay.”
Carcassonne
Carcassonne (Spiel des Jahres 2001). A tile-laying game where you build a medieval landscape of cities, roads and monasteries, placing followers to score. Z-Man Games lists 2 to 5 players, ages 7 and up, and 30 to 45 minutes. The jury’s listing for the German edition says ages 10 and up, which shows why the box you buy matters.
Catan
Catan (Spiel des Jahres 1995). Players build roads, settlements and cities and trade resources, racing to 10 victory points. The publisher lists 3 to 4 players, ages 10 and up, and 60 to 90 minutes. It is the longest of the three, so it suits families with older kids.

Board games for couples and two players
Many games list “2 to 5 players” but play differently with two. A game built only for two avoids that problem.
Sky Team won Spiel des Jahres in 2024. Its publisher, Le Scorpion Masqué, describes it as a cooperative game “exclusively for 2 players”: one pilot, one co-pilot, silently placing dice to land a plane. The jury lists ages 10 and up and about 20 minutes, and noted that a missed landing makes you “want to try again straight away.”

- Codenames (Spiel des Jahres 2016): two teams, one-word clues, a grid of 25 words. Czech Games Edition lists 4 to 8 players, ages 10 and up and about 15 minutes.
- Just One (Spiel des Jahres 2019): a cooperative guessing game for 3 to 7 players where duplicate clues are thrown out before the guesser sees them. The jury lists ages 8 and up and about 20 minutes.
- Dito! (JinxO) (Spiel des Jahres 2026): players try to write the same word as others. The jury lists 3 to 7 players, ages 10 and up and about 30 minutes.

Cooperative games for people who hate losing to each other
In a cooperative game, everyone wins or loses together against the game. It suits families where competition ends in sulking, and couples who want to play as a team.
Pandemic is the best-known example. Z-Man Games describes a team keeping four diseases at bay while racing to find cures, for 2 to 4 players, ages 8 and up, in about 45 minutes. It was nominated for Spiel des Jahres in 2009. Bomb Busters, the 2025 winner, is a cooperative deduction game for 2 to 5 players aged 10 and up.

Spiel des Jahres winners: what the badges mean
Spiel des Jahres is a German critics’ award, founded in 1978 and first presented in 1979. Winners are announced every July. The jury gives three main awards, and each has its own colored pawn on the box:
- Red: Spiel des Jahres. Family and adult games.
- Anthracite gray: Kennerspiel des Jahres. Since 2011, for people who have played for some time.
- Blue: Kinderspiel des Jahres. Since 2001, for children up to age 8.
