The best board games for adults depend on the evening. For a thinking game with friends, pick Wingspan, Splendor or Azul. For a crowd with drinks, pick Codenames or Just One. For a team that wants to win together, pick Pandemic or The Crew. Kennerspiel des Jahres winners are the jury’s picks for experienced adult players.

These reward planning over luck. Each one has a short turn, so a new player is never waiting long, but the choices get more interesting over several plays.

Splendor has the shortest listed play time. The jury called it a “tactical game” with “an ingeniously simple mechanic.” Azul is the most visual: players draft colored tiles and build mosaics on their own boards. Wingspan has the longest listed time, and it suits people who enjoy watching a combination build over a game.

Party games for adults

A good adult party game has three traits: a rule you can explain in one breath, rounds short enough for late arrivals to join, and no one knocked out early. Four Spiel des Jahres winners fit.

Codenames (2016). Two teams, a grid of 25 words, and a spymaster giving one-word clues that link several of their team’s words. Czech Games Edition lists 4 to 8 players, ages 10 and up and about 15 minutes. The jury found it so gripping “that it’s hard to break away from it.”

Just One (2019). Everyone writes a one-word clue for a single guesser, and any duplicate clues are removed first. It is cooperative, for 3 to 7 players, about 20 minutes, per the jury.

Pictures (2020). Players rebuild a photo using odd materials so the others can pick it out of a grid. The jury lists 3 to 5 players and about 30 minutes, which makes it a smaller-table party game.

Dito! (JinxO) (2026). You try to write the same answer as the others; matching scores, and matching exactly one other person scores extra. The jury lists 3 to 7 players, ages 10 and up.

Cooperative board games for adults

Co-op games put the whole table against the game. They suit couples who would rather not compete and groups with mixed experience, since stronger players can help newer ones.

  • Pandemic. Z-Man Games describes a team of disease specialists keeping four diseases at bay while collecting the cards to cure each one. 2 to 4 players, ages 8 and up, about 45 minutes. It was nominated for Spiel des Jahres in 2009.
  • The Crew (Kennerspiel des Jahres 2020). A cooperative trick-taking card game for 3 to 5 players, about 20 minutes per the jury. A good fit for people who grew up on Hearts or Spades.
  • Bomb Busters (Spiel des Jahres 2025). A cooperative number-deduction puzzle for 2 to 5 players, 20 to 40 minutes.
  • MicroMacro: Crime City (Spiel des Jahres 2021). Players solve cases by searching a large, detailed city map. Edition Spielwiese lists 1 to 4 players, ages 12 and up.
  • Daybreak (Kennerspiel des Jahres 2024). World powers cooperate to cut CO2 emissions. At 60 to 120 minutes and ages 12 and up, it is the heaviest on this list.

When there are only two of you

Many adult games list two players but play better with more. Sky Team (Spiel des Jahres 2024) is built only for two: Le Scorpion Masqué describes it as a cooperative game “exclusively for 2 players,” with pilot and co-pilot silently placing dice to land a plane. How complex should an adult board game gift be?

Pitch it one step above what they already play, not three. The Spiel des Jahres jury’s awards work as a rough ladder:

  1. Spiel des Jahres (red pawn on the box) covers family and adult games. Most gateway and party games sit here.
  2. Kennerspiel des Jahres (anthracite gray pawn) targets people who have been playing for a while. Wingspan, The Crew, Daybreak and Rebirth are all Kennerspiel winners.

Buying tips for adult board game gifts

  • Read the box, not the listing title. Player counts and ages can differ between editions. The jury’s listing for Wingspan’s German edition gives 2 to 5 players and about 75 minutes, while Stonemaier lists 1 to 5 and 40 to 70 minutes.
  • Check the language. Award-winning games are often sold in German editions with German card text.
  • Buy new and sealed for a gift, and read seller feedback before you pay.

What is a good board game for adults who don't usually play?

Start short. Splendor (about 30 minutes) and Azul (30 to 45 minutes) are both quick, and Azul won Spiel des Jahres in 2018. For a group, Codenames plays in about 15 minutes, according to its publisher.
